In a bizarre turn of events, police have mistakenly detained Sam Curry, a former security researcher at Yuga Labs, in the high-profile 2022 Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT theft case. ZachXBT, a renowned on-chain detective, broke the news on Twitter, stating that Curry was wrongfully implicated due to his involvement in investigating the theft.
The case involved the theft of 14 NFTs, worth over $1 million, from BAYC. ZachXBT's investigation traced the stolen funds through Tornado Cash and identified the actual suspect's wallet and associated X account, which has since been deleted. However, the police had mistakenly used Curry's IP address, which appeared in OpenSea logs due to his investigation, as evidence against him.
Curry had uncovered the attacker's private key during his research, leading to the unfortunate misunderstanding. The incident highlights the challenges and complexities of digital investigations and the risks of misidentifying individuals based on digital traces.
